About the guide

About Home & Away, a game-day guide to Calgary and Edmonton

A small editorial desk writes about where to watch hockey and football in Alberta's two big cities, and dates every venue listing so you know how fresh it is.

Who writes the guide

Home & Away, Alberta Game Day is put together by a small editorial desk that follows hockey and football in Calgary and Edmonton. The desk writes, checks and updates every page, and it answers mail sent to [email protected].

There are no bylines on the pages. The work is done as a desk rather than as a set of personal columns, and the editorial standards below apply to every page in the same way.

Pages are kept light so they load fast on a phone in a crowded concourse, and nothing on them changes until an editor checks it.

What the guide covers

The core is practical: which neighbourhoods fill up on game night, where wing nights and happy hours were listed, how to get to the Saddledome and Rogers Place without paying for parking you cannot find. The Calgary guide and the Edmonton guide are the two main starting points.

Around that sit pages on the rivalry itself, from the Battle of Alberta record to the Stampeders and the Elks, and a plain-language section on how regulated sports betting works in Alberta for adults 18 and over. That section explains rules and terms. It does not list operators or tell anyone what to bet.

CFL Sundays get space too. Football crowds behave differently from hockey crowds, and the bars that suit one are not always the bars that suit the other.

How venues are chosen and checked

A venue makes the list when it shows the games and has something concrete worth telling you about: a weekly wing deal, a happy hour window, a patio, a late kitchen. Each listing is checked against the venue's own website or, where the venue posts nothing, against the published listing named on the page, and it carries the date of that check. The current listings were checked in October 2026.

Bars change their specials more often than their signs. A 50-cent wing night can turn into a dollar wing night between one season and the next, so every page tells you to confirm with the venue before you go, and that advice is meant seriously.

Where a detail could only be found on a third-party listing and not on the venue's own site, the text says so or leaves it out.

Independence and money

No venue pays to appear, and none can pay to move up a list. The site carries no advertising trackers, no analytics cookies and no affiliate links. It names no betting operators and links to none.

That keeps the guide small. It also means a listing is there because it was useful the week it was checked, which is the only reason worth having.

Home & Away, the bar

Home & Away was a Calgary sports bar. It opened on 17th Avenue SW in 2015, moved to First Street SW in 2019, ran an Edmonton location for a few years and closed in April 2026. It was known for seating Flames and Oilers fans in the same room, and that idea is still the best way to watch a game in this province.

The guide does not take bookings or pass on messages for any venue. The history of Home & Away from 2015 to 2026 is written from published news reports, with the sources listed at the foot of that page.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Who runs the Home & Away game day guide?

A small editorial desk that covers hockey and football in Calgary and Edmonton writes and checks every page. There are no individual bylines. The desk can be reached by email at [email protected], and every message about a venue update or a correction is read.

Is Home & Away still a sports bar in Calgary?

No. The Home & Away sports bar closed in April 2026. Its story is told on the history page, based on published news reports.

Do venues pay to be listed in the guide?

No. Venues are listed because they show the games and have something concrete to offer, such as a weekly wing deal or a patio. Nobody pays to appear or to be placed higher. The site has no affiliate links and names no betting operators.

How current are the venue listings?

Each listing is checked against the venue's own website or, where the venue posts nothing, against the published listing named on the page, and dated. The current set was checked in October 2026. Specials change often, so confirm the day and the price with the venue before you head out, especially early in a new season.
