Where to watch a Flames game when you don't have a ticket

Most nights, the answer to where to watch a Flames game in Calgary is a short stretch of 17th Avenue SW, with the Beltline a few blocks north as the backup. Those two neighbourhoods hold the long bars and the rooms where the screens are already on the right channel at puck drop. The walk between 17th Ave, the Beltline and Victoria Park is short enough that you can switch rooms at the second intermission.

Jamesons Pub at 1230 17 Ave SW lists more than 20 HD screens, NHL included, plus a pet-friendly patio for the shoulder months. Whiskey Rose Saloon, further east at 1012 17 Ave SW, is the louder option, a saloon with drink specials that change through the week.

Show up at puck drop on a Saturday and you will be standing. An hour early usually buys a choice of tables; arriving during the anthem buys the end of the bar by the door, where the draft from the street comes in every time someone leaves. Staying home instead? The Flames and Oilers TV and streaming guide sorts out which night sits on which channel.

How the Red Mile got its name in 2004

The Red Mile is 17th Avenue SW during a Flames playoff run, and the name dates from 2004. That spring the Flames reached the Stanley Cup Final and took it to a seventh game, and after every win the avenue filled with fans in red jerseys, as many as 55,000 of them on the biggest nights. Pictures of the crowds travelled far beyond Alberta. Who first called it the Red Mile is still argued about, and the Calgary papers have printed more than one version.

Before 17th, the party had another address. During the 1986 and 1989 runs, crowds gathered on 11th Avenue SW, known at the time as Electric Avenue.

Nobody books the Red Mile. It forms on the sidewalk a few minutes after the final horn of a playoff win, and the bars along the avenue are simply the nearest roofs. If you want a table inside on one of those nights, you need to be in it before the game starts, not after.

Beltline pubs with the most screens

Pig & Duke at 1312 12 Ave SW lists 25 screens and a pet-friendly patio, and its Wednesday wing deal helps if the game falls midweek (the full week of wing nights by day is worth a look before you pick). CRAFT Beer Market on 10 Ave SW has a 360-degree rooftop patio and runs big-game features on Sundays and Mondays, which in practice means football as often as hockey. Bottlescrew Bill's at 140 10 Ave SW is the older pub of the group, with covered, heated patios that allow dogs.

Hudsons Canada's Pub on 5 St SW calls itself Downtown Calgary, though it sits in the Beltline. Its daily happy hour starts at 9 p.m., which is useful when a game goes to overtime and you are still there for the shootout.

If screen count is the only thing that matters to you, Pig & Duke is the pick.

Flames watch parties and Battle of Alberta nights

A Calgary Flames watch party is usually less organized than the phrase suggests. In a playoff spring the bigger rooms on 17th and in the Beltline fill hours before puck drop, and the rest of the evening is a line on the sidewalk. In the regular season the crowd is calmer, except on the nights the Oilers are in town or on the other screen.

Those are the games to plan around. As of the end of the 2025-26 season, Calgary led the all-time series at 146-134-18-7, and the first Flames-Oilers game of 2026-27 was scheduled for October 28. The Battle of Alberta and its four playoff meetings in the 1980s explain why a Tuesday in late October can feel like April.

For a decade, one of the stranger rooms for those games was Home & Away, the sports bar that opened on 17th Avenue SW in 2015 and later moved to Victoria Park. It was known for welcoming fans of every team, Oilers jerseys included, which in Calgary took some nerve. It closed in April 2026, and the bar's story from 2015 to 2026 is told on its own page.

Neighbourhood rooms away from the core

Not everyone wants to fight for a stool on 17th. Richmond's Pub at 3919 Richmond Rd SW shows the games and runs Wingsanity on Tuesdays.

Driving out to a neighbourhood pub sounds like a step down until you remember parking. An empty lot beats circling the Beltline at quarter to seven, every single time.

Booking, sound and the last Saddledome season

None of these venues promises the sound will be on, and on a busy night the playlist often wins. If commentary matters to you, ask when you book. Book for anything bigger than a midweek game against a team from the other conference, and call earlier still with a group of six or more: a table for two turns over during a game, a long table almost never does.

The venue details here were checked in October 2026. Deals, screens and patio rules change, sometimes week to week, so look at the bar's own page before you go.

One more option deserves a thought this winter. The Flames play the 2026-27 season at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and Scotia Place is due to open in fall 2027. If it opens on time, this is the old building's final Flames season, and a night at the Saddledome itself may beat any bar stool. Fans travelling north for a road game can use the Edmonton bar list, though expect to be outnumbered in orange.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Where is the best place to watch a Flames game in Calgary?

17th Avenue SW and the Beltline have the biggest concentration of rooms. Jamesons Pub on 17th lists more than 20 screens and Pig & Duke on 12 Ave SW lists 25. CRAFT Beer Market and Bottlescrew Bill's on 10 Ave SW are also set up for games. Book a table for playoff and Oilers nights, and check each bar's page before you go.

What is the Red Mile in Calgary?

The Red Mile is the stretch of 17th Avenue SW where Flames fans gather after playoff wins. The name dates from the 2004 run to the Stanley Cup Final, when crowds of up to 55,000 people in red filled the avenue. In the 1986 and 1989 runs, fans gathered on 11th Avenue SW, then known as Electric Avenue.

Where can you watch a Flames game near the Saddledome?

On Flames home game days, King Eddy in the East Village keeps food and drinks at $10 and under between 2 and 6 p.m. In Victoria Park, Native Tongues Taqueria on 12 Ave SW discounts from 2 to 4 p.m. on weekdays. The Beltline pubs on 10th and 12th Avenue are a short walk further west.

Do Calgary bars hold Flames watch parties during the playoffs?

In a playoff spring the large rooms on 17th Avenue and in the Beltline fill hours before puck drop, so book where a bar takes reservations. There is no single official gathering place among the bars. After a win, the crowd moves onto 17th Avenue itself. Arrive before the game starts if you want a seat inside.

Is 2026-27 the last Flames season at the Saddledome?

Yes, if the schedule holds. The Flames play all of 2026-27 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and the city's target for Scotia Place is fall 2027, before the 2027-28 season starts. The old arena, open since 1983, will be torn down after the move, with the province paying for the demolition.
